Dominik Szoboszlai missed Liverpool’s 3-0 Premier League loss to Manchester City on Sunday due to a hamstring problem. He was also unavailable for the Reds’ 6-3 Champions League victory over LASK in midweek.
The Hungarian midfielder returned to the starting lineup for Saturday’s trip to Brentford but was unable to complete the first half.
Szoboszlai went down off the ball and appeared to suffer another hamstring problem. Looking visibly frustrated, he headed straight down the tunnel at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Moments later, Liverpool were awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned following a brief VAR review. Replays showed Dango Ouattara getting to the ball before making contact with Alexis Mac Allister.
Brentford then took the lead in the 44th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter headed home an excellent cross from Igor Thiago.
However, the hosts were reduced to ten men shortly before half-time after Yehor Yarmolyuk was dismissed for violent conduct against Jeremy Jacquet.
Following a review, referee John Brooks confirmed the decision, explaining that the Brentford midfielder had committed a headbutting offence.
Liverpool attempted to take advantage of their numerical superiority by introducing Jeremie Frimpong for Ronald Araujo at the beginning of the second half.
However, Frimpong was forced off just six minutes later after picking up an injury, with Rio Ngumoha coming on in his place.
Despite suffering two injury setbacks, Liverpool fought their way back into the contest after the hour mark.
Victor Munoz calmly found the net to score his second Premier League goal, bringing Liverpool back into the game.
The Reds then took the lead in west London through Alexander Isak, who fired a powerful shot into the bottom corner from inside the penalty area.
Brentford’s difficult afternoon continued in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card, leaving the hosts with just nine players.
The result brought Brentford’s unbeaten Premier League run to an end, while Liverpool moved above them into fifth place in the league standings.
