Liverpool fans were left questioning the officials after Yehor Yarmolyuk was shown a straight red card for headbutting Jeremy Jacquet inside Brentford’s penalty area.
Despite the violent incident taking place inside the box, Liverpool were surprisingly not awarded a penalty, leaving many supporters wondering what happened.
The explanation comes down to a little-known IFAB rule. Referee John Brooks sent Yarmolyuk off following a VAR review, but because the ball was out of play while Liverpool prepared to take a corner, a penalty could not legally be awarded.
According to IFAB Law 12, free kicks and penalties can only be given for offences committed while the ball is in play.
So, despite the red card, Liverpool were not entitled to a spot-kick under the rules.
DID THE REFEREE MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION? 🤔🔴
