Arsenal have been handed a major update on Julian Alvarez’s future following the confirmed arrival of Bruno Guimaraes at the Emirates.
The Gunners are preparing for their first Premier League title defence after finally ending their wait for the trophy in the 2025/26 campaign. Mikel Arteta’s side are continuing to strengthen their squad this summer, with Guimaraes becoming one of their biggest additions.
Arsenal had also been heavily linked with a sensational move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, but those hopes were ended after Madrid secured the Brazilian’s long-term future.
Attention has now turned back to Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, who has been on Arsenal’s radar since their Champions League meetings last season.
Arsenal eliminated Atletico 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals, with Alvarez scoring Atletico’s only goal across the two legs. The Gunners eventually reached the final but lost to PSG on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time.
However, Atletico boss Diego Simeone has now provided a significant update on Alvarez’s situation.
Speaking ahead of Atletico’s friendly against Manchester City, Simeone confirmed that the club has made a decision regarding the Argentine’s future and indicated that he is expected to remain at Atletico Madrid.
The comments follow strong remarks from Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who previously criticised Barcelona for their attempts to sign Alvarez and insisted that the Spanish club would not be pushed into selling their star forward.
For now, Alvarez looks set to stay in Madrid, despite interest from several major European clubs.
The striker enjoyed an impressive Champions League campaign last season, becoming the first player in Atletico Madrid’s history to score 10 or more goals in the competition as his side reached the semi-finals.
For Arsenal, Alvarez’s apparent availability being off the table could be a blow as Arteta looks to add more firepower to his attack. Despite signing Viktor Gyokeres last summer, the Gunners appear keen to strengthen their attacking options further.
With Bruno Guimaraes now joining the squad, Arsenal have already made a major statement in the transfer market. But their continued pursuit of elite attackers suggests Arteta believes more attacking quality may still be required if Arsenal are to successfully defend their Premier League crown.
