Spurs skipper Cristian Romero attracting surprise interest from Premier League rivals
Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for two unexpected Premier League clubs, with a cut-price deal said to be under consideration.
Spurs have been active in the transfer market this summer as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes his squad following last season’s narrow escape from relegation. The club secured Premier League survival on the final day and has since strengthened with the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali.
The additions of Van Hecke and Senesi have increased competition in central defence, fuelling speculation over Romero’s future.
According to reports from Italy, both Arsenal and Chelsea are monitoring the Argentina international, while Inter Milan remain interested. Spurs are believed to value Romero at around €50 million (£42 million), although Inter are reportedly hoping to strike a deal closer to €25 million through a loan with an obligation to buy.
Romero is said to be open to returning to Serie A after leaving Atalanta for Tottenham four years ago, with Inter viewed as his preferred destination.
However, Arsenal and Chelsea could complicate Inter’s pursuit. Chelsea’s interest comes despite their reported move for Maxence Lacroix, while Arsenal may be seeking defensive reinforcements with William Saliba expected to miss the start of the season through injury.
Even so, Tottenham would likely be reluctant to sell their captain to one of their direct Premier League rivals, making any potential deal far from straightforward.
