Tottenham Hotspur are expected to appoint James Maddison as their new captain ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the midfielder in line to inherit the armband from Cristian Romero.
The decision comes as Romero edges closer to a summer exit, with growing speculation surrounding his future and several top European clubs monitoring his situation.
Reports suggest Roberto De Zerbi has identified Maddison as the ideal leader to captain the team, and an official announcement could be made in the coming weeks.
Chelsea are among the clubs keeping an eye on Romero, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have also been linked with the Argentine defender.
Tottenham began their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 victory over MK Dons behind closed doors at Hotspur Way, although Maddison was not involved. Supporters are hopeful the England international was simply being rested and will return for the club’s next friendly.
Maddison made just three appearances last season after suffering an ACL injury during a pre-season match against Newcastle in August 2025. Despite that setback, he has remained an important figure in the dressing room, serving as vice-captain since joining Spurs from Leicester City in 2023.
Romero was appointed captain before the 2025/26 campaign following Son Heung-min’s departure, but with his exit now appearing increasingly likely, Maddison looks set to become Tottenham’s next skipper.
