Roberto De Zerbi Eyes More Firepower, But Is Savinho Really the Right Fit for Tottenham?
After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Tottenham Hotspur are continuing their summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi, with the Italian eager to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Having already secured the signings of Marcos Senesi, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, Spurs are now turning their attention to reinforcing the attack. One of the latest names linked with the club is Manchester City winger Savinho, who was also admired by former Spurs boss Thomas Frank.
Tottenham are reportedly preparing to open discussions with City over a potential move for the Brazilian as they look to add more quality out wide.
Why Savinho May Not Be the Ideal Signing
Despite the interest, there are reasons for Spurs to think twice. Savinho’s profile bears striking similarities to that of Mohammed Kudus, raising concerns that the club could be signing another winger with many of the same strengths—and weaknesses.
Kudus joined Tottenham from West Ham in a £55 million move but has struggled to deliver consistently in front of goal. After scoring five times in 35 Premier League matches during the 2024/25 season, he managed only three goals in 26 league appearances last term.
Savinho has shown a similar pattern. The Brazilian has impressed creatively, registering 13 Premier League assists across the past two seasons, but has found goals much harder to come by, scoring only seven times in 84 appearances in all competitions.
His finishing record underlines that issue, with just two goals from an expected-goals tally of 7.34 while also missing 12 clear-cut opportunities.
Those figures closely mirror Kudus’ own output, making it fair to question whether Tottenham should instead pursue a winger with a stronger goalscoring record rather than another player with comparable limitations.
Schjelderup Emerging as a Better Alternative
Fortunately for Spurs, another option appears to be gathering momentum. According to Football Insider, Tottenham have made contact with Benfica over a potential move for highly-rated winger Andreas Schjelderup.
The Norwegian international, reportedly valued at around £34 million, is expected to leave Benfica after failing to agree a contract extension, making him an attractive target this summer.
Schjelderup enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign, producing significantly better attacking numbers than Savinho. He was directly involved in 11 league goals in Portugal—nine more than Savinho managed in the Premier League—while outperforming his expected-goals statistics.
Across all competitions, he finished the season with 10 goals and five assists, including two goals in seven Champions League appearances.
The versatile attacker also caught the eye at the World Cup. Despite starting only two matches, he scored against England in the quarter-finals and registered three assists in six appearances, including one against France and two in Norway’s knockout victory over Brazil.
Those performances suggest Schjelderup has both the quality and confidence to make the step up to the Premier League. By contrast, Savinho was left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad and has yet to consistently provide the goals that Tottenham need.
With both players available, Schjelderup appears to offer greater attacking output and could prove to be the smarter investment for Spurs this summer.
