Mateus Fernandes has emerged as one of the standout names of the summer transfer window, with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United battling for his signature while Real Madrid and PSG monitored the situation from afar.
For much of the window, it was believed the Portuguese midfielder had no preferred destination and would join whichever club reached an agreement with West Ham first. Tottenham explored several options to complete the move, including potential player-exchange proposals, with a loan involving Mikey Moore reportedly discussed. However, Spurs ultimately secured the transfer by agreeing to pay West Ham’s full valuation.
Record-Breaking Transfer
According to David Ornstein, Tottenham reached an agreement on Tuesday after submitting a guaranteed £85 million offer. Manchester United reportedly withdrew from the race after deciding the transfer fee and the player’s wage demands exceeded their budget.
The £85 million deal makes Fernandes the most expensive signing in Tottenham’s history, surpassing the £65 million spent on Dominic Solanke in 2024. The move also reflects the club owners’ recent promise to invest heavily in strengthening the first-team squad, academy, and football operations as part of their long-term project.
Romano Confirms Agreement
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano later delivered his trademark “Here We Go,” confirming that Tottenham will pay a fixed, fully guaranteed £85 million fee to complete the signing.
Fernandes is expected to become Spurs’ fifth arrival of the summer, following the additions of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Martin Dúbravka, as Roberto De Zerbi continues reshaping the squad ahead of the new season.
