Liverpool supporters have made their preference clear over who they would like to see join Andoni Iraola’s coaching staff, with former vice-captain James Milner emerging as the fans’ favourite ahead of Thiago Alcântara.
With Iraola continuing to shape his backroom team, speculation has grown that a recently retired ex-Liverpool player could return to the club in a coaching role. Thiago, who recently finished a spell as an assistant coach at Barcelona, brings coaching experience, while Milner’s leadership, professionalism, and winning mentality have made him a popular choice among supporters.
In a fan poll, Milner comfortably came out on top, with many praising his work ethic, fitness standards, and ability to mentor younger players. Supporters described him as the “ultimate professional” and someone capable of maintaining the high standards expected at Liverpool.
However, Thiago also received strong backing, with fans highlighting his exceptional tactical knowledge, communication skills, and potential to become an elite coach in the future.
Many supporters believe Liverpool should appoint both club legends, suggesting Milner could focus on fitness, discipline, and player development, while Thiago could assist Iraola with tactical coaching and technical improvement.
With Iraola already adding Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper to his coaching team, it remains to be seen whether either Milner or Thiago will be offered a role at Anfield ahead of the new season.
