Tottenham Hotspur are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market as Roberto De Zerbi continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
The North London club have already enjoyed a busy summer, beginning with the signing of Andy Robertson from Liverpool before strengthening their backline further by bringing in Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi.
Spurs then completed a £52 million move for Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, reuniting him with De Zerbi after their successful partnership at Brighton. Veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has also arrived to provide additional experience and competition between the sticks.
Even with those reinforcements, Tottenham remain determined to add quality in midfield. Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is still considered De Zerbi’s top target, with the Italian coach convinced the midfielder would be the perfect fit for his system. Initial talks have taken place with Tonali’s representatives, but Newcastle’s reported £100 million asking price has made a deal difficult.
With negotiations proving complicated, Spurs have stepped up their interest in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. Manchester United have monitored the talented Portuguese midfielder for months, but Tottenham have now emerged as genuine favourites after accelerating discussions with the Hammers.
According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have submitted an opening package worth up to £85 million. The proposal reportedly includes £65 million guaranteed, with the remaining £20 million tied to performance-related bonuses and add-ons.
The payment structure is intended to satisfy West Ham’s valuation while allowing Tottenham greater financial flexibility.
Fernandes only arrived at West Ham from Southampton last summer but quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout players. His impressive performances have also attracted interest from European heavyweights including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.
Despite that competition, Tottenham are growing increasingly confident they can secure the 21-year-old’s signature. Reports suggest Spurs have presented the strongest financial offer so far, while Fernandes is also said to be open to making the move to North London.
Following West Ham’s relegation, the midfielder is regarded as one of the club’s most valuable assets, meaning any transfer would command a significant fee. For Spurs, signing Fernandes would mark another major statement in an already ambitious summer rebuild.
Fernandes has earned widespread praise for his performances in England. Former Southampton midfielder Jo Tessem labelled him the club’s standout player, highlighting his pace, technical quality and composure. Tessem even compared his development to Roméo Lavia’s, insisting Fernandes has all the qualities needed to become one of the Premier League’s elite midfielders thanks to his passing range, intelligence and ability on the ball.
