Tottenham Hotspur have taken a far more proactive approach in the transfer market this summer following a campaign that saw them narrowly avoid relegation from the Premier League.
What was expected to be the start of a new chapter after Daniel Levy’s departure instead turned into a turbulent season. Spurs went through both Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor before Roberto De Zerbi eventually brought stability, leading the club to a 17th-place finish and ensuring survival by the slimmest of margins.
Determined to avoid a repeat, Tottenham have wasted little time strengthening their squad. Jan Paul van Hecke has completed a £52 million move from Brighton, while Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have arrived on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth. The club are also believed to be closing in on a fourth addition, with a reserve goalkeeper reportedly high on their agenda.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher praised Tottenham’s swift work in the market, suggesting De Zerbi has played a major role in reshaping the club’s transfer strategy.
“I really like the direction Spurs are heading in under De Zerbi,” Carragher said. “For years, Tottenham were known for dragging negotiations deep into the transfer window in pursuit of the best deal under Daniel Levy. Since Levy left, things haven’t exactly been straightforward, so there’s pressure to get things right. De Zerbi has impressed and appears to have significant influence. He seems keen to have new players through the door early so they can settle in during pre-season.”
Spurs are also looking to strengthen their midfield, with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes among the names linked with moves. If Tottenham succeed in landing all their key targets, their spending could reportedly reach £225 million, making this one of the most aggressive recruitment drives in the club’s history.
Carragher also shared his thoughts on Tonali, highlighting the Italian’s qualities.
“Tonali is a player I’ve always admired,” he said. “He brings energy, strength and real quality in midfield. Last season may not have been his best, but it’s hard to stand out when the team is struggling. He’s the type of player I felt could have strengthened Liverpool as well.”
Regarding Newcastle, Carragher suggested the club may be entering a transitional phase, with the lack of European football next season potentially encouraging departures.
“Newcastle have achieved a lot under Eddie Howe, including winning the Carabao Cup and qualifying for the Champions League twice,” he added. “But it feels like this current cycle could be nearing its end. Missing out on Europe may make some players consider fresh challenges, while the club could decide to cash in on valuable assets, as they have already done with Anthony Gordon and could now do with Tonali.”
