Trent Alexander-Arnold Could Be Heading Back to Liverpool Within Nine Months
Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly emerged as a possible candidate to return to Liverpool next summer, just over a year after leaving Anfield for Real Madrid.
According to reports, Liverpool are among several Premier League clubs keeping an eye on the England international’s situation in Spain. His limited playing time under new Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has reportedly raised questions about his long-term future at the club.
Alexander-Arnold’s Difficult Start in Madrid
Alexander-Arnold has featured in five of Real Madrid’s opening eight matches across all competitions, starting three of them. He has also remained an unused substitute on three occasions and has been deployed out of his natural position once.
The 27-year-old has played just 292 minutes from a possible 720 so far this season.
Meanwhile, summer signing Denzel Dumfries appears to have become Mourinho’s preferred option at right-back, having already accumulated significantly more minutes.
Alexander-Arnold’s playing time has also declined considerably over the past few seasons, making his current situation at Madrid something Liverpool could potentially monitor closely.
Could Liverpool Really Bring Trent Back?
A possible return to Anfield would not be straightforward.
Several major questions would have to be answered, including whether Real Madrid would actually be willing to sell him, whether Liverpool would be prepared to meet the asking price, and whether Alexander-Arnold himself would want to return after the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure.
There would also be questions about how he would fit into Andoni Iraola’s team and what his return would mean for Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.
Despite the controversy surrounding his exit, there is no denying Alexander-Arnold’s quality. He played a major role during Liverpool’s successful era under Jürgen Klopp and helped the club win Premier League titles under different managers.
His creative and passing numbers remain impressive, particularly his long-range distribution, chance creation and crossing ability.
A return to Liverpool could therefore give the player an opportunity to rebuild his relationship with supporters while bringing an experienced and familiar option back into the squad.
Why Liverpool Could Consider Another Right-Back
Liverpool may need additional depth at right-back over the next couple of transfer windows, particularly if they decide not to strengthen the position in January.
Conor Bradley remains an important long-term option, but injuries have limited his availability. Jeremie Frimpong has also yet to completely establish himself as the undisputed choice in the position, while Ronald Araújo has even been used there despite naturally playing elsewhere.
That could leave Liverpool searching for an experienced right-back who can contribute immediately without preventing Bradley from developing into a long-term starter.
At 28 next season, Alexander-Arnold would bring plenty of experience and already understands the club, the Premier League and Liverpool’s environment.
The Biggest Obstacle Could Be the Price
The biggest question could ultimately be the transfer fee.
Real Madrid signed Alexander-Arnold for a relatively small fee after paying to release him from his Liverpool contract, so the Spanish giants could potentially make a substantial return if they decide he is no longer central to their plans.
If Alexander-Arnold were open to returning to Liverpool, the move could potentially benefit both the player and the club.
For now, however, a comeback remains speculation rather than a confirmed transfer, with his situation at Real Madrid likely to be one of the key factors determining whether the possibility develops further.
