Liverpool Players Who Could Receive Premier League Medals if Man City’s Titles Are Stripped
Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of the financial charges brought against them by the Premier League, potentially opening the door to a range of punishments.
The club are expected to appeal the decision and have continued to maintain their innocence. If the ruling is upheld, possible sanctions could include significant fines, points deductions, relegation and the removal of previously won titles.
The allegations concern a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018. During that period, Manchester City won the Premier League three times. If those titles were eventually taken away and retrospectively awarded to the teams that finished second, Liverpool could be recognised as champions for the 2013-14 season, while Manchester United could receive the other two titles.
21 Liverpool Players Who Could Be Eligible
If Liverpool were retrospectively awarded the 2013-14 Premier League title, 21 players from Brendan Rodgers’ squad could potentially receive championship medals.
Steven Gerrard would be among the most notable names. The Liverpool captain came extremely close to winning the league in 2014 before the club’s title challenge collapsed late in the season.
Luis Suarez could also receive a retrospective medal. The Uruguayan striker enjoyed an outstanding campaign, winning the Player of the Season award and setting a Premier League record for goals in a 38-game season at the time.
The players who could potentially be recognised include:
– Simon Mignolet
– Mamadou Sakho
– Daniel Agger
– Martin Skrtel
– Aly Cissokho
– Kolo Toure
– Jose Enrique
– Glen Johnson
– Martin Kelly
– Jon Flanagan
– Lucas Leiva
– Jordan Henderson
– Joe Allen
– Steven Gerrard
– Philippe Coutinho
– Luis Alberto
– Raheem Sterling
– Victor Moses
– Luis Suarez
– Daniel Sturridge
– Iago Aspas
Some Liverpool Players Could Miss Out
Not every player who featured for Liverpool during the 2013-14 campaign would necessarily qualify for a retrospective medal.
Premier League rules indicate that players need to make at least five league appearances to qualify. As a result, players such as Andre Wisdom, Jordon Ibe, Joao Carlos Teixeira, Brad Smith, Brad Jones, Fabio Borini, Tiago Ilori, Jordan Rossiter and Danny Ward could be left out because they did not reach the required appearance threshold.
For now, any retrospective changes would depend on the final outcome of Manchester City’s appeal and the Premier League’s eventual decision on the appropriate sanctions.
