Alan Shearer Criticises Roberto De Zerbi After Tottenham’s Latest Defeat

Alan Shearer has delivered a strong assessment of Roberto De Zerbi following Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing 3-2 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa.

Spurs head into the international break still without a league victory after five matches, leaving them in the relegation zone. Their difficult start is particularly concerning after they narrowly avoided relegation last season.

De Zerbi arrived late in the previous campaign and helped Tottenham survive. He was then given significant backing during the summer transfer window as the club looked to rebuild the squad. Several new players were brought in, raising expectations ahead of the new season.

However, the early results have failed to match the club’s investment. Tottenham had to wait until their fifth league game to score their first goal, with Conor Gallagher finally finding the net during Saturday’s defeat to Aston Villa. Despite that breakthrough, Spurs remain winless.

Shearer’s Assessment

Speaking on the BBC, former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer highlighted that six of the players who started against Villa were brought in during De Zerbi’s tenure.

Shearer argued that Tottenham currently look fragile and lack strength, adding that it is now De Zerbi’s responsibility to find a solution.

He also highlighted Spurs’ poor record when falling behind. Tottenham have failed to win any of their last 48 Premier League matches in which they conceded first, something Shearer believes reflects the team’s current mentality and struggles.

Pressure Increasing on De Zerbi

With a large portion of the squad having arrived under De Zerbi, the manager is facing growing pressure to improve the team’s performances.

The international break gives him an opportunity to analyse the problems, reassess his tactics and work on ways to make Tottenham more resilient when matches do not go according to plan.

De Zerbi has remained composed publicly and insists he can turn the situation around. However, with Tottenham still searching for their first league win and sitting inside the bottom three, the pressure will continue to build.

Spurs will be hoping for a strong response when Premier League action resumes.
