Arsenal Open Discussions Over Shock Move for Tottenham Star in Potential North London Transfer

Arsenal Explore Stunning Move for Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero

Arsenal have reportedly made an approach to gather information about the possibility of signing Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, in what would be one of the most controversial transfers in recent Premier League history.

The Gunners are searching for defensive reinforcements after William Saliba was ruled out for the opening part of the season following back surgery. While Gabriel Magalhães, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapié and Jurrien Timber provide cover, Mikel Arteta is believed to be keen on adding another experienced centre-back.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have already contacted Romero’s representatives to explore whether a deal could be possible. However, Tottenham have reportedly made it clear they have no intention of selling their captain to their North London rivals.

Instead, Spurs would prefer to negotiate with clubs outside England, with Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan both showing interest in the Argentina international. Romano added that Atlético currently appear to be leading the race as discussions continue.

Although Tottenham’s stance makes a deal extremely difficult, Arsenal are monitoring the situation in case negotiations with European clubs fail to progress.

A direct transfer between the two fierce rivals would be exceptionally rare. While Sol Campbell famously joined Arsenal on a free transfer in 2001, the last player to move directly from Tottenham to Arsenal for a transfer fee was goalkeeper Pat Jennings in 1977.

With Arsenal still looking to strengthen before the transfer window closes, Romero remains one of several defensive options being assessed, although convincing Tottenham to sanction such a move would be a major obstacle.
