Mateus Fernandes Reveals Why He Rejected Manchester United for Tottenham
Mateus Fernandes has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, despite strong interest from Manchester United.
The 22-year-old midfielder completed an £85 million move from West Ham to Spurs in early July after attracting attention from several European heavyweights, including Arsenal, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United.
Although United reportedly made Fernandes one of their top transfer targets, they ultimately chose not to match Tottenham’s valuation. Reports also suggested the Red Devils were uncertain about the player’s desire to move to Old Trafford before switching their attention to other midfield options.
Speaking about his decision, Fernandes revealed that Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi played a decisive role. He explained that the Italian’s constant communication with both him and his family created a strong bond, adding that De Zerbi even promised to look after him “like a second father” during his time in England.
Fernandes also highlighted the influence of fellow Portuguese international Pedro Porro, who personally encouraged him to join Spurs. Porro reportedly told him that the squad wanted him at the club and praised the team’s mentality, helping convince the midfielder that Tottenham was the right destination.
The Portuguese star said his ambition to compete for major trophies and challenge for the Premier League title also made Spurs an attractive choice.
Despite West Ham’s relegation last season, Fernandes impressed with his energy, ball progression, and creativity in midfield. De Zerbi praised his technical quality, intelligence, work rate, and composure under pressure, describing Tottenham as the ideal place for the youngster to continue his development.
