James Milner Returns to Liverpool to Begin Coaching Journey
James Milner is back at Liverpool, where he is temporarily helping coach academy players while working towards earning his UEFA Pro Licence, according to James Pearce.
The 40-year-old officially retired from professional football this summer after an incredible 24-year Premier League career. He is now gaining valuable coaching experience at the club where he spent eight successful years.
Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe invited Milner to work with the younger age groups as part of his coaching development. His role is informal, meaning he is assisting the existing coaching staff rather than managing a specific team.
Milner was recently involved with Liverpool’s Under-11s at the Kirkby training centre and is expected to work with different age groups as he continues his coaching education.
During his time at Liverpool between 2015 and 2023, Milner made 332 appearances and helped the club win both the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp.
He also played for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Brighton, where he ended his playing career.
Milner holds the record for the most Premier League appearances, with 658 matches to his name. His final appearance came against Manchester United in May.
The former England international already has some coaching experience, having previously worked with Liverpool’s academy during his playing days and also gained experience at Brighton.
His return to Liverpool marks the beginning of what could become a new chapter in his football career — this time from the touchline.
