‘The Problem Is…’ — Andoni Iraola Delivers Concerning Cody Gakpo Injury Update Ahead of Fulham Clash
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has admitted he is unsure whether Cody Gakpo will be fit enough to feature against Fulham on Saturday.
The Dutch forward picked up a minor adductor problem during Liverpool’s Premier League victory over Ipswich last weekend. As a precaution, he was left out of the Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Liverpool secured a 2-1 win at Anfield, although there were concerns when Bradley Barcola was substituted during the match. Iraola later confirmed that the winger’s withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a serious injury.
However, Gakpo’s availability remains uncertain, with Iraola hoping the 27-year-old can recover in time to make the squad.
Asked whether Gakpo would be available for Fulham, Iraola said:
«“I don’t know. I hope so, but I don’t know. He doesn’t have a proper injury, but he finished with niggles in both adductors the other day.”»
He explained that Liverpool had initially expected Gakpo to be available against Atletico but ultimately decided against risking him.
«“It’s not a big thing, but the problem is we play here in two days and a half.”»
Iraola now expects the next couple of days to be crucial in determining whether Gakpo can play any part against Fulham.
Liverpool will be hoping for positive news, particularly given Gakpo’s impressive start to the campaign. The forward has already registered one goal and three assists in his opening three games.
With another important match against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup coming just days later, Iraola could also choose to be cautious with his attackers.
Liverpool will certainly want Gakpo back as soon as possible, but the club will not want to take unnecessary risks with a player who is already dealing with an adductor issue.
The Reds will also be without Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa, who are already confirmed absentees.
