PGMOL Under Fire After Controversial Refereeing Call During Arsenal vs Chelsea
PGMOL has faced heavy criticism following a contentious refereeing decision during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
Referee Chris Kavanagh came under fire after showing Morgan Rogers a yellow card following a clash with Declan Rice, despite the Chelsea midfielder appearing to have been cynically tripped by the Arsenal star.
Arsenal came from behind to secure all three points at the Emirates and return to the top of the Premier League, level on points and goal difference with Manchester City.
Chelsea made the perfect start when Rogers produced an excellent volley inside the opening two minutes. Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard then struck to complete Arsenal’s comeback.
Kavanagh’s Decision Sparks Backlash
The match was packed with physical battles and controversial moments, leaving Kavanagh with several difficult decisions to make.
Gabriel Magalhaes was arguably fortunate to avoid a booking after his boot made contact with goalkeeper Emi Martinez while he attempted to reach the ball. However, the incident appeared accidental.
The biggest controversy came late in the second half when Rice tripped Rogers as the Chelsea midfielder was approaching the Arsenal penalty area.
Kavanagh failed to award a free-kick or show Rice a yellow card, instead allowing play to continue and giving Chelsea a goal kick after Cole Palmer’s shot flew over the bar.
Rogers was furious and confronted Rice, pushing his England teammate in frustration. Kavanagh then booked Rogers for his reaction but left Rice unpunished.
Gary Neville was among those who questioned the decision while working on Sky Sports.
Neville argued that Rice had clearly stopped Rogers from progressing and said he was surprised the referee had failed to spot the challenge.
Footage of the incident quickly spread online, with many fans echoing Neville’s criticism and accusing Kavanagh of favouring Arsenal.
Some supporters also directed criticism at PGMOL, claiming the organisation has repeatedly given Arsenal favourable decisions.
Carragher Highlights Arsenal’s Defensive Strength
Despite the controversy, Arsenal demonstrated why they are considered among the leading contenders for another Premier League title.
Chelsea, usually one of the league’s more dangerous attacking teams, managed just one goal and recorded an expected-goals figure of only 0.35.
Ezri Konsa also impressed on his full debut after joining Arsenal from Aston Villa for £55 million, filling in alongside Gabriel while William Saliba continues his recovery from a back injury.
Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal’s defensive strength without Saliba is particularly concerning for their rivals, describing the Frenchman as arguably the best centre-back in world football.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to the Champions League before returning to Premier League action against Sunderland.
