Tottenham Suffer Nightmare Start as Brentford Run Riot
Tottenham Hotspur’s new Premier League campaign could hardly have started worse, with Spurs suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Brentford and ending the opening weekend at the bottom of the table.
Brentford were in complete control from the beginning and raced into a two-goal lead before the half-hour mark. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring before Vitaly Janelt doubled the advantage. Tottenham struggled to respond after the break, and Michael Kayode added a third to put the result beyond doubt.
The Bees were even handed an opportunity to score a fourth when they won a penalty, but Igor Thiago struck the post, allowing Spurs to escape further punishment.
The defeat also equals Tottenham’s heaviest-ever opening-day loss in Premier League history, matching their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United 15 years ago. The result adds to the growing concerns surrounding a club that has finished 17th in consecutive seasons despite spending more than £230 million on new players this summer.
Jamie O’Hara Slams Richarlison
talkSPORT pundit and lifelong Tottenham supporter Jamie O’Hara was furious with what he witnessed and singled out Richarlison for particularly harsh criticism.
The Brazilian striker failed to register a shot during the game and was booked after committing two fouls. Speaking at half-time, O’Hara described Tottenham’s display as unacceptable and insisted there could be no excuses, even with injuries affecting the squad.
He then questioned whether Richarlison is still good enough to play for Spurs, suggesting that James Maddison could potentially operate as a false nine instead.
O’Hara went even further, arguing that Richarlison should not be in Tottenham’s starting XI and blaming both him and Lucas Bergvall for contributing to the club’s struggles during their recent finishes of 17th.
His frustration continued after the final whistle. O’Hara warned that performances like this could drag Tottenham into another relegation fight and described the showing as embarrassing and disgraceful.
Spurs’ Poor Numbers Tell the Story
Tottenham’s struggles were also evident in the statistics. Spurs failed to record a single shot on target during the opening 45 minutes, marking the 10th time they have failed to do so in a Premier League match since the beginning of last season.
The result will be especially frustrating given Tottenham’s huge summer investment. More than £230 million has already been spent on players such as Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Sandro Tonali, with all four starting against Brentford.
And Spurs may not be finished spending, with reports suggesting their summer outlay could eventually exceed £300 million if they complete a move for Manchester City winger Savinho.
Tottenham now have an immediate opportunity to bounce back when they welcome Newcastle United next weekend, while Brentford travel to Leeds United looking to maintain their position at the top of the table.
