Cristian Romero Could Leave Tottenham as De Zerbi Eyes Defensive Overhaul
Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is becoming increasingly uncertain, with reports suggesting the Argentine defender could be among the high-profile departures this summer.
According to journalist Nicolo Schira, Romero has attracted transfer interest and is no longer considered untouchable under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian coach is believed to be planning significant changes to Spurs’ squad following a disappointing season.
Romero has been a key figure in Tottenham’s defence for years, but De Zerbi appears keen to build a backline that better suits his tactical vision. The club has already strengthened defensively with the arrival of Jan Paul van Hecke, while discussions continue over the future of highly-rated youngster Luka Vušković.
Interest in Romero is nothing new. Reports have previously linked him with a move to Atlético Madrid, while uncertainty surrounding his long-term role in North London has continued to grow.
Although losing a World Cup-winning defender would be a major decision, Tottenham could be tempted to sell if a substantial offer arrives. Such a move would provide additional funds for De Zerbi’s rebuilding project as he reshapes the squad ahead of the new campaign.
No final decision has been made, but with Spurs actively restructuring their defence, Romero’s departure now appears more realistic than ever.
