6ft 2in Defensive Star Emerges as Potential Successor to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly preparing for a major defensive change, with a young centre-back emerging as a potential replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Could this be Van Dijk’s final season at Anfield? The possibility is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The Dutch defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he will turn 36 next summer.

Liverpool have rarely offered major contracts to players at that age, with even club legend Steven Gerrard never receiving one. However, Van Dijk remains one of the world’s finest defenders and continues to play a crucial role for the Reds.

Despite his importance, Liverpool could begin planning for life without their captain in 2027, potentially ending an association that would have lasted more than nine years. Finding a suitable replacement will undoubtedly be a difficult challenge.

Interestingly, Liverpool appear willing to trust young defenders with significant responsibilities. The club currently have only two centre-backs under contract beyond this season, and both are younger than 22.
Now, another promising youngster has reportedly caught their attention.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing Finn Jeltsch, the 20-year-old centre-back currently playing for Stuttgart. He played an important role in the German side’s fourth-place finish last season.

Despite his young age, Jeltsch has already demonstrated his ability to compete regularly at senior level for a successful team. His performances have reportedly attracted interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Liverpool are not alone in the race, with Barcelona and Real Madrid also among the leading contenders. Atletico Madrid and Arsenal have additionally been mentioned as potential suitors.

For Stuttgart, the growing interest presents a mixed situation. Losing Jeltsch, potentially as early as 2027, would be a significant setback, particularly if his departure comes sooner than expected.

However, competition between Europe’s top clubs could substantially increase his transfer value.
Liverpool’s reported interest suggests Jeltsch could be viewed as more than just a long-term prospect, especially if the club considers him capable of becoming a regular first-team player.

With Liverpool expected to strengthen their centre-back options next year, Jeltsch is certainly a name worth watching. If the Reds decide to plan for Van Dijk’s eventual departure, the young Stuttgart defender could emerge as one of their preferred candidates.
