Andoni Iraola suffers a major setback at Liverpool as a surprise target reportedly prefers a move to Real Madrid.

Liverpool’s hopes of securing one of their key transfer targets have suffered a setback, with reports suggesting the player now favours a move to Real Madrid instead.

It has been a busy few days for Liverpool in the transfer market under new manager Andoni Iraola. The club recently completed the signing of Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz, beating competition from Newcastle United by activating his €40m release clause.

However, celebrations were quickly followed by disappointment, as former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté reportedly agreed a move to Real Madrid after deciding not to renew his contract at Anfield. The French centre-back is set to join the Spanish giants on a four-year deal.

Now, Liverpool could face another blow, with Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck also reportedly leaning towards a transfer to Real Madrid. The 26-year-old has been linked as a potential defensive replacement for Liverpool, but he is said to prefer a switch to the Bernabéu.

Schlotterbeck recently signed a new Dortmund contract that includes a release clause believed to be between €50m and €60m, available to select clubs until mid-July. Both Liverpool and Real Madrid are reportedly eligible to activate it.

However, Spanish reports claim the defender’s preference is to join Real Madrid this summer, with hopes of linking up with his Germany teammate Antonio Rüdiger.

Real Madrid are also reportedly keen to strengthen further in defence despite recent signings, as they continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
