Alan Shearer and Jamie Carragher have both backed Chelsea to defeat Tottenham in Saturday’s London derby at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea head into the clash sitting fourth in the Premier League after securing two consecutive victories. Tottenham, meanwhile, are 16th and finally picked up their first league win of the season against Coventry on Monday.
Roberto De Zerbi will be hoping that result gives his players the confidence to produce another strong performance. However, Tottenham face a difficult challenge, having failed to win at Stamford Bridge since April 2018.
Shearer believes Chelsea have looked stronger in recent matches, particularly thanks to Moises Caicedo’s impressive performances in midfield. He also credited Caicedo and Jordan Henderson with helping the Blues become more balanced as a team.
Although Shearer welcomed the return of James Maddison, who scored against Coventry, he was not entirely convinced by Tottenham’s overall performance. He therefore expects Chelsea to claim all three points.
Carragher shares the same prediction, backing Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea to overcome De Zerbi’s Tottenham. The former Liverpool defender believes the Blues have enough quality to secure a home victory.
BBC pundit Chris Sutton also expects Chelsea to come out on top. While he acknowledged Tottenham’s gradual improvement and the importance of their Coventry win, he believes their miserable record at Stamford Bridge will continue.
Chelsea’s recent defensive improvement is another positive, with their 2-0 victory over Everton delivering their first Premier League clean sheet of the season.
