Virgil van Dijk is approaching the final months of his Liverpool contract, which expires at the end of this season. According to a new report, a European club is keen to secure his signature next summer.
At 35, the Dutch defender has established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history. He has been among the finest centre-backs of his generation, winning several major honours, including the Champions League and Premier League.
However, Van Dijk experienced a difficult evening during Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Villarreal on Tuesday. The Reds captain made an error that contributed to the visitors’ opening goal and acknowledged after the match that his individual performance had fallen below his usual standards.
Reflecting on the game, he said:
“It was a terrible start. I think the saying is you fight an uphill battle, and as a defender it is pretty difficult to come back from it. I tried but it was a bad day at the office personally, but we do it together with 11 players.
Fortunately it didn’t happen too many times in my Liverpool career but I was not the best, but we won and it’s not about me. It’s all about us.”
With his contract entering its final year and no agreement over an extension yet, Liverpool face an increasingly concerning situation regarding their captain’s future.
Several clubs could look to sign the experienced defender on a free transfer in 2027. A respected source on X has now claimed that Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor are interested in bringing him to the club.
The report stated:
“Super Lig giants Trabzonspor want to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer. Van Dijk’s first choice is to stay at Liverpool, but no agreement has been made yet.”
Despite his difficult performance against Villarreal, Van Dijk has continued to demonstrate his quality this season. Liverpool would therefore have strong reasons to offer him a new contract and secure his future at Anfield.
Although the defender is entering the latter stages of his career, his outstanding positioning, defensive intelligence and leadership could allow him to remain at the highest level for several more years. Thiago Silva is an example of a defender who continued competing at an elite level into his forties.
Losing Van Dijk next year, potentially alongside goalkeeper Alisson, would represent a significant setback for Andoni Iraola and Liverpool.
Earlier this year, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher placed Van Dijk among the club’s greatest-ever players while discussing his remarkable contribution to the team.
Carragher explained that although many Liverpool players earn legendary status after winning major trophies, only a select few deserve to be described as giants of the club.
He mentioned icons such as Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen, John Barnes and Mohamed Salah before making his position on Van Dijk clear.
“Without a doubt he is right in the middle of that. And he’s not at the bottom of the list, I can assure you. He will go down as one of the greatest players ever to play for Liverpool – not one of the greatest centre-backs, one of the greatest players.”
A potential move to Trabzonspor could also see Van Dijk reunite with Mohamed Salah. While the prospect of the two Liverpool icons playing together again might appeal to many supporters, Reds fans would undoubtedly prefer to see their captain remain at Anfield rather than lose him on a free transfer.
