Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has come under heavy criticism from supporters after a series of defensive errors helped Villarreal race into a 2-0 lead at Anfield in their Champions League clash.
The Dutch defender was blamed for the opening goal after his attempted header back to Alisson was intercepted by Georges Mikautadze. He was also criticised for his role in the defensive lapse that allowed Sergi Cardona to score Villarreal’s second.
Despite Liverpool eventually fighting back to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory, Van Dijk’s performance sparked furious reactions online, with some supporters questioning his current form.
One fan described his display as an “absolute disaster,” while others called it one of his worst performances in a Liverpool shirt. Some even suggested that age and fatigue could be catching up with the experienced centre-back.
Van Dijk also faced scrutiny over Villarreal’s late consolation goal after he failed to maintain the defensive line, with supporters highlighting his involvement in several of the visitors’ goals.
However, not every fan believes the captain deserves the criticism. Some supporters have defended him, pointing to his years of outstanding service to Liverpool and suggesting that he needs more rest after playing regularly for club and country.
With Liverpool conceding seven goals across their last three matches, the debate over the team’s defensive form is growing.
Is Van Dijk finished at the top level, or does Liverpool’s captain simply need a rest? 🤔👇
