Liverpool have been handed a worrying injury update ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City, with Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak both major doubts after reportedly missing Thursday’s training session.
Both forwards returned early from international duty after suffering injuries, raising concerns about their availability for the crucial encounter at Anfield.
Liverpool Echo chief correspondent Paul Gorst provided an update from the club’s training ground on Thursday, confirming that the two attackers were doubtful for the weekend fixture.
Writing on X, Gorst stated: “Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak are major doubts for Liverpool’s visit from Manchester City after appearing to miss training today.”
Isak reportedly picked up a thigh injury while representing Sweden, while Gakpo suffered an ankle problem during the Netherlands’ match against Serbia.
Neither player appeared to participate in Liverpool’s main training session, leaving their chances of featuring against Enzo Maresca’s side uncertain.
Concerns over Gakpo’s condition increased after he was forced off during the international break. Initial reports suggested the Dutch winger could face several weeks out if the injury involved ligament damage.
Although Iraola had previously declined to rule either player out of Sunday’s game, both remain injury concerns ahead of the showdown.
Liverpool are already without Hugo Ekitike, who is recovering from an Achilles injury. If Gakpo and Isak are also unavailable, the club could face a significant challenge in finding suitable attacking options for the Manchester City game.
Young forward Lewis Koumas could be among the players considered for a greater role. The 20-year-old has attracted attention with his recent performances and displays for Wales during the international break.
Summer signing Bradley Barcola and young winger Víctor Muñoz could also come into consideration as Liverpool assess their attacking options ahead of the important fixture.
With Manchester City visiting Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool will be hoping for positive news on both forwards as they look to maintain their strong home record.
