Liverpool ready to bring in ‘world-class’ replacement as Celtic eye January move following surprise Reds decision

Liverpool have the financial power to bring in “the best people in the world” to replace Richard Hughes, according to football finance expert Stefan Borson.

Hughes joined the Reds in 2024 as Arne Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Slot enjoyed a dream first campaign, guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season.

However, things changed dramatically the following season. Liverpool backed Hughes heavily in the summer of 2025, with FSG approving more than £400 million in transfer spending, but the massive investment failed to deliver the expected results.

There had already been speculation that Hughes could leave for Al-Hilal, and Liverpool officially confirmed his departure earlier this month.

Club president Mike Gordon is now leading the search for Hughes’ successor. Borson believes Liverpool have everything required to make an elite appointment and avoid the mistakes made by Manchester United.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson said Liverpool will look to recruit “the best people in the world,” adding that their global reputation and financial strength should make attracting top candidates relatively straightforward.

He warned, however, that the club must ensure the people making the appointment choose wisely, pointing to Manchester United’s history of repeatedly making poor recruitment decisions.

Meanwhile, Celtic are reportedly monitoring Liverpool youngster Luke Chambers.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke says the Scottish giants are keeping a close eye on the left-back after Liverpool surprisingly decided to keep him at the club this summer rather than send him out on loan.

Several Championship clubs had reportedly shown interest, but Liverpool opted to retain Chambers. Celtic could now consider a move for him in January if his situation changes.
