Report: Liverpool offered opportunity to sign 23-year-old Real Madrid defender who could solve one of Iraola’s biggest problems

Liverpool have reportedly been given the opportunity to sign Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, a move that could help Andoni Iraola address his shortage of options at centre-back.

The Reds faced a major defensive problem during their pre-season tour of the United States, with Joe Gomez picking up an injury just minutes into the opening friendly against Sunderland. With the transfer window still open, Liverpool are expected to explore the market for defensive reinforcements.

According to TEAMtalk, intermediaries have approached Liverpool regarding a possible move for Asencio after the 23-year-old was reportedly told he could leave Real Madrid before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool have admired the Spanish defender for some time and are said to have been interested after learning about his availability. Iraola is also believed to rate Asencio highly, particularly because of his versatility. The defender can operate both centrally and at right-back.

However, Asencio currently has no intention of leaving the Santiago Bernabéu. He reportedly wants to stay at Real Madrid and compete for a place in José Mourinho’s starting XI. There have also been no formal negotiations over a transfer so far.

As things stand, a move to Liverpool is considered unlikely unless Asencio changes his mind.

Why Asencio could be ideal for Liverpool

Asencio would appear to tick several important boxes for Liverpool.

His primary position is centre-back, an area where the Reds urgently need more depth. He can also play at right-back, another position where Liverpool have experienced injury concerns involving Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

His statistics from the 2025/26 La Liga campaign also suggest he could suit Iraola’s high-intensity style. He ranked highly for passing accuracy, winning possession in the final third and other defensive metrics.

The major obstacle remains Asencio himself. Unless Liverpool can convince him that he would play an important role at Anfield, persuading him to leave Madrid could prove extremely difficult.

Nevertheless, securing the 23-year-old could provide Iraola with a versatile defensive option and potentially solve one of the biggest problems currently facing his squad.
