Liverpool are reportedly becoming increasingly convinced that Ronald Araújo deserves a permanent move to Anfield following his impressive performances since arriving from Barcelona.
The Uruguay international joined Liverpool on a season-long loan during the summer, with the Reds securing an option to sign him permanently for around €55 million (£46m–£47m).
Despite being a natural centre-back, Araújo has adapted brilliantly to life in the Premier League and established himself as Liverpool’s first-choice right-back.
According to Marca, Liverpool are prepared to activate the purchase option if he maintains his current level of performance.
The report follows earlier claims that the club would wait until later in the season before making a final decision on his future.
Araújo has already made 10 appearances for the Reds, impressing with his physical strength, defensive ability, aerial dominance and versatility.
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has also expressed his admiration for the defender, praising his mentality and willingness to play wherever the team needs him.
However, the potential transfer is not without its concerns. Araújo will turn 28 in March, and a fee approaching £47 million would represent a significant investment in a player with limited long-term resale potential compared with younger alternatives. His wages could also make the overall deal expensive.
Nevertheless, Liverpool may feel that securing an established defender who already understands Iraola’s system is worth the investment.
Rather than spending a similar amount on an untested replacement, the Reds could choose to keep a player who has already demonstrated his ability to deliver at Anfield.
