Liverpool wonderkid can make just one more appearance in 2026 despite Monaco performance
Liverpool’s highly-rated teenage defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe has impressed throughout pre-season, but the youngster is set to make just one more appearance for the Reds in 2026.
The 18-year-old centre-back was handed a starting role by new manager Andoni Iraola during Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season defeat to Monaco at Anfield.
Ndukwe was part of a strong Liverpool side featuring stars such as Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Alisson Becker and captain Virgil van Dijk. He caught the eye during the first half before being substituted at the break.
The 6ft 6in defender joined Liverpool from Austrian club Austria Wien for around £2.6 million and has quickly made an impression amid the club’s defensive injury problems.
However, despite his encouraging performances, Ndukwe faces a major restriction. He currently does not have the required UK work permit to play competitive matches after failing to reach the necessary points threshold when he signed.
Liverpool’s available Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) squad places have also become limited under the Premier League’s updated regulations. Fellow new signing Mor Talla Ndiaye is reportedly occupying the club’s spare ESC slot.
As a result, Ndukwe will not be able to feature for Liverpool in competitive first-team matches for the remainder of 2026. His final opportunity to play for the Reds this year will come in their last pre-season fixture against Como next Saturday.
The defender is expected to spend the first half of the season on loan, allowing him to gain valuable first-team experience elsewhere. His agent Georg Lederer revealed that several top clubs have already shown serious interest in taking Ndukwe on loan.
Liverpool are reportedly hopeful that Ndukwe will qualify for a work permit from January, potentially allowing him to return and compete for a place in Iraola’s squad in 2027.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are also closing in on defensive reinforcements, with Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo reportedly nearing a season-long loan move to Anfield.
