Andoni Iraola Offered an Immediate £157m Solution as Liverpool Accused of Making ‘Mistake After Mistake’

Liverpool will return to Premier League action on Sunday when they welcome Brighton to Anfield, with Alan Shearer warning that the Reds must address their defensive problems to avoid dropping points against the in-form visitors.

Andoni Iraola’s side head into the encounter after an entertaining 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal on Tuesday. However, despite securing all three points, Liverpool were far from convincing defensively and had to fight back from two goals down to claim the win.

Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring for Villarreal in the fourth minute before Sergi Cardona doubled their advantage shortly before the half-hour mark. Liverpool responded before the break, with Alexis Mac Allister and
Ronald Araujo finding the net to restore parity.

Mac Allister struck again after the restart to complete the turnaround, while Florian Wirtz extended Liverpool’s advantage. Villarreal refused to give up, though, as Tani Oluwaseyi scored late on to set up a tense finish.

The victory maintained Liverpool’s perfect record in the Champions League this season, but their defensive shortcomings remain a concern ahead of a difficult Premier League test against Brighton, who currently occupy third place in the table.

Shearer Highlights Liverpool’s Defensive Problems
Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has expressed serious concerns about Liverpool’s defensive performance against Villarreal, insisting that repeated mistakes could prove costly against a Brighton side enjoying an impressive spell of form.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer described Liverpool’s opening 35 minutes as one of their poorest performances, criticising their inability to retain possession, their defensive organisation and the amount of space they allowed their opponents.

He acknowledged that Liverpool improved significantly towards the end of the first half and continued to perform better after the interval, following tactical adjustments from Iraola. Ryan Gravenberch moved to right-back, while Virgil van Dijk was introduced as the Reds gradually took control of the contest.

Despite the comeback, Shearer believes Liverpool still have considerable defensive work to do, particularly after conceding three goals at home to Villarreal.

He warned that Brighton could punish those weaknesses if Liverpool continue to leave gaps between their defensive lines and allow opponents too much space behind their backline.

With several challenging fixtures approaching, Liverpool will need to become more organised and eliminate costly errors if they hope to maintain their momentum in the Premier League.

Shearer Urges Iraola to Start Rio Ngumoha
Beyond Liverpool’s defensive concerns, Shearer has also called on Iraola to reward Rio Ngumoha with a starting place against Brighton following the teenager’s impressive display against Villarreal.

The 18-year-old winger was one of Liverpool’s brightest performers on Tuesday, providing two assists and offering a constant attacking threat. His pace, confidence and ability to take on defenders caught the attention of both the supporters and Shearer.

The former England international believes Ngumoha did enough to earn another start, even with big-money summer arrivals Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola competing for attacking positions.

Liverpool reportedly spent a combined £157 million on the two players, but fitness concerns could complicate Iraola’s selection decisions ahead of Sunday’s encounter. Munoz missed Thursday’s training session, while Barcola trained separately from the main group.

Shearer praised Ngumoha’s willingness to take on defenders and his contribution to Liverpool’s comeback, particularly his excellent assist for Mac Allister.

He believes leaving the youngster out after such a strong performance would be disappointing, arguing that Liverpool have an exceptional young talent who deserves the opportunity to continue developing through regular first-team football.

Although Shearer recognises the quality of Munoz and Barcola, he feels Ngumoha has earned the right to retain his place in the starting XI.
Liverpool Face a Crucial Test

Sunday’s meeting with Brighton presents Liverpool with an opportunity to build on their European victory, but the Reds cannot afford another defensive display like the one against Villarreal.

Brighton’s current form and attacking threat make them dangerous opponents, particularly if Liverpool continue to concede possession cheaply and leave spaces for their attackers to exploit.

Iraola must therefore find the right balance between defensive stability and attacking creativity, while also deciding whether Ngumoha has done enough to earn a starting role.

With Brighton arriving at Anfield in impressive form, Liverpool face a significant challenge that could reveal whether their recent defensive problems are beginning to improve.
