Jamie Carragher Urges Liverpool to Drop Florian Wirtz After Man City Humiliation
Jamie Carragher has called on Liverpool to drop Florian Wirtz from the starting lineup following the Reds’ disappointing 3-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City.
The former Liverpool defender believes the club have given the £116 million summer signing enough opportunities to prove himself and insists it may now be time for manager Andoni Iraola to make a change.
Wirtz struggled to make an impact during Sunday’s clash at Anfield, as Liverpool suffered their first league defeat of the season. The match also saw Ryan Gravenberch controversially sent off in the second half.
The German international was substituted in the 66th minute after failing to influence the game significantly.
Carragher Demands Changes to Liverpool’s Starting XI
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher expressed his frustration with Wirtz’s recent performances, arguing that the midfielder should no longer be guaranteed a place in Liverpool’s starting lineup.
The former defender believes Liverpool need greater attacking influence from their record signing, particularly in important matches.
As reported by Goal, Carragher said: “The Florian Wirtz where he’s almost nailed on that he plays every week in that No. 10 position, it has to stop. I think Liverpool have given him enough chances and he has to come out of the team.”
His comments underline the growing pressure on Wirtz to justify the substantial investment Liverpool made to bring him to Anfield.
The 23-year-old arrived with a huge reputation after his £116 million move, but he has struggled to consistently deliver the performances expected of one of Europe’s most exciting attacking midfielders.
His failure to score in the Premier League this season has added to the scrutiny surrounding his form.
Wirtz Disappoints Again Against Manchester City
Liverpool’s heavy defeat to Manchester City provided another difficult afternoon for the German playmaker, who was unable to make a meaningful difference before being replaced in the 66th minute.
During his time on the pitch, Wirtz recorded 46 touches and completed 20 of his 24 attempted passes. He also registered one shot off target, created no major chances and won just four duels.
His limited contribution stood out as Manchester City controlled key areas of the contest.
With his Premier League goal tally still at zero this season, questions are increasingly being asked about whether he should continue occupying the No. 10 role.
International Form Offers Hope for Wirtz
Despite his struggles at club level, Wirtz has recently shown encouraging signs while representing Germany.
The midfielder delivered an impressive performance during the international break, scoring against Serbia and demonstrating the attacking quality that made him such a highly sought-after player.
However, reproducing that form consistently in the Premier League remains a challenge.
Liverpool now face an important decision over how best to use their expensive summer signing, with Carragher believing the midfielder should be taken out of the starting XI.
Whether Iraola follows that advice remains to be seen, but the pressure is mounting on Wirtz to deliver the performances Liverpool expected when they invested £116 million in his services.
