What Thierry Henry Said About Bradley Barcola Looks More Interesting After Another Goalless Game
Thierry Henry’s recent warning to Bradley Barcola is starting to attract even more attention after the Liverpool winger failed to find the net again for France.
Barcola joined Liverpool from PSG in a huge £123 million summer transfer and has endured a difficult start at Anfield. The 24-year-old is yet to register a goal or assist in his first five appearances for the Reds.
His struggles have continued on the international stage. Barcola has now gone four consecutive games without scoring for France since finding the net against England in the World Cup third-round play-off.
He started Monday’s clash with Belgium on the left side of France’s attack but was unable to make the difference. Barcola missed a major chance after breaking through on goal, sending a tame effort straight at Belgian goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt.
He managed just two shots, lost possession nine times and won only two of his six ground duels before being substituted in the 72nd minute. His replacement, Desire Doue, went on to score in France’s impressive 4-1 comeback victory.
With competition for the left-wing position increasing, Barcola is already facing pressure just months into his Liverpool career.
Henry Warned Barcola He Must Deliver
Before Monday’s game, Thierry Henry had already spoken about the pressure surrounding Barcola.
The Arsenal legend admitted that adapting to a new club, system and country is difficult, especially because Barcola does not speak English. Henry also pointed out that the £123 million price tag was not the player’s decision.
However, Henry believes the massive transfer fee means Barcola will not have unlimited time to settle.
He praised the winger’s pace and one-on-one ability but highlighted finishing as an area that still needs improvement.
Henry also explained that players with Barcola’s talent and price tag are expected to produce quickly, particularly when competing at the highest level with Liverpool and France.
Barcola enjoyed a strong season with PSG last campaign, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.
But after another disappointing outing for France, Henry’s warning that “people are not going to wait” for Barcola to become the finished article is looking increasingly relevant.
The pressure on Liverpool’s £123 million signing is beginning to rise.
