Liverpool Fans Call for Jeremy Jacquet to Be Tried in Midfield After Impressive France Debut
Liverpool supporters are already calling for a surprising change after Jeremy Jacquet’s impressive France debut against Belgium.
The 21-year-old centre-back, who joined Liverpool from Rennes for around £55 million this summer, made his international debut on Monday night and delivered a composed performance alongside Chelsea defender Maxence Lacroix.
Jacquet’s strong start to life at Anfield, where he has formed a promising partnership with Virgil van Dijk, earned him a place in Zinedine Zidane’s France squad. He then showed exactly why he deserved the opportunity.
Although Michael Olise’s late solo goal secured France a 1-0 win, Jacquet’s display quickly became a major talking point among Liverpool fans.
The young defender completed 67 of his 73 passes, giving him an impressive 92% passing accuracy. He also recorded 27 carries, won five of eight ground duels and made four recoveries.
His ability to carry the ball forward and play progressive passes particularly caught the attention of supporters, with some suggesting that his technical ability could make him effective in midfield.
One fan wrote that Jacquet possesses the technical quality to operate as a No. 6, while another argued that he could potentially play as a defensive midfielder.
A third supporter went even further, suggesting that moving Jacquet from central defence into midfield could unlock his potential as a world-class No. 6.
Jacquet was originally brought in as a potential long-term successor to Van Dijk, but he has quickly established himself as an important player in Liverpool’s starting XI.
Reports from France have also suggested that his international future could develop quickly, with the defender potentially becoming a regular partner for Dayot Upamecano.
France are scheduled to face Italy on October 2, and after his impressive showing against Belgium, Jacquet could have a strong case to retain his place.
Could Jacquet Become a Midfielder for Liverpool?
Liverpool’s midfield remains an area where manager Andoni Iraola has several decisions to make, and some supporters believe Jacquet could provide an unexpected solution.
The Frenchman could theoretically operate as the deepest midfielder alongside either Ryan Gravenberch or Alex Mac Allister, while allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to move into the No. 10 position.
However, such a change would create another selection dilemma, potentially leaving Florian Wirtz on the bench or requiring him to move to the left side.
There is also the issue of disrupting Jacquet’s developing defensive partnership with Van Dijk. Moving him into midfield could force Liverpool to rely on Joe Gomez or Ronald Araujo in central defence.
For now, a midfield role appears unlikely, but Jacquet’s technical quality and ability to progress the ball have certainly given Liverpool fans something interesting to discuss.
