Anguilla Star’s Long Dreadlocks Lead to Two Red Cards in Bizarre Nations League Clash
Anguilla forward Aedan Scipio became the centre of attention during a bizarre Concacaf Nations League match after two Antigua and Barbuda players were sent off for pulling his extremely long dreadlocks.
Antigua and Barbuda cruised to a 5-0 victory over Anguilla, but despite the comfortable win, they finished the game with just nine players after two separate incidents involving Scipio’s hair.
Scipio came on in the 69th minute with his team already trailing by five goals. Just moments later, his unusual hairstyle became the focus of the match.
Keon Greene attempted to stop Scipio as he tried to break away with the ball and grabbed his dreadlocks. The referee immediately showed Greene a straight red card.
Remarkably, the same thing happened again late in stoppage time.
Shalon Knight grabbed Scipio’s dreadlocks as the Anguilla attacker attempted to escape, prompting the referee to once again produce a straight red card. Antigua and Barbuda were therefore reduced to nine men.
Scipio’s extraordinarily long dreadlocks have been part of his trademark appearance for several years. He attracted attention internationally as far back as 2021, when his hair was already long enough to cover much of his shirt number.
Reports have since suggested that his dreadlocks have grown all the way down to his knees or even his ankles.
To keep them under control during matches, Scipio has developed a unique solution. He uses a band around his waist to secure the dreadlocks against his body so they don’t interfere with his movement.
After the strange events against Antigua and Barbuda, that method of securing his hair may have proved more useful than ever.
