Paul Merson Tears Into Arsenal After Brighton’s Third Goal
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has criticised the Gunners after watching their response to going 3–0 down against Brighton in the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta’s side travelled to the Amex Stadium with a perfect league record, but their impressive run came under serious pressure during a difficult afternoon against Brighton.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after finding space on the edge of the box before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage before half-time. The situation became even worse for Arsenal after new signing Chema Andres scored his first goal for Brighton to make it 3–0.
Speaking on Soccer Saturday, Merson was particularly frustrated by Arsenal’s reaction after the third goal.
The former Arsenal midfielder pointed out that Brighton continued to look dangerous, while Arsenal players appeared reluctant to take responsibility on the ball.
Merson highlighted Declan Rice’s frustration and suggested that Arsenal needed more players willing to demand possession, take control and create something for the team.
He later continued his criticism, arguing that Brighton looked more likely to score again than Arsenal were to get on the scoresheet. He also noted that Rice had moved into a right-back position as Arsenal struggled to find a way back into the contest.
Merson also singled out Bruno Guimaraes, who was making his first Premier League start for Arsenal. He felt the midfielder struggled to influence the game as Brighton consistently pressed him and gave Arsenal little time to make decisions in possession.
According to Merson, Brighton’s aggressive pressing prevented Arsenal from settling into their normal rhythm, with the hosts repeatedly closing down the Gunners and forcing them into difficult situations.
The defeat also ended Arsenal’s opportunity to equal a remarkable club record. Had they beaten Brighton, they would have matched the club’s record of winning their opening eight matches of a season, a feat last achieved in 1903.
Arsenal’s strong start had included their Community Shield victory over Manchester City, a 4–2 Carabao Cup win against Ipswich and a 1–0 Champions League victory over Napoli.
However, the setback against Brighton has provided plenty for Arteta and his players to consider as they look to respond in their next fixtures.
