Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their transfer plans as the club prepares for a new chapter following the departure of Arne Slot. Sporting director Richard Hughes is said to be pushing hard to secure the signing of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande before the 2026 World Cup gets underway.
The transfer speculation follows reports that Fenway Sports Group decided to part ways with Slot after a disappointing spell in charge. Focus has since turned to finding his replacement, with Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate for the role.
According to reports, Iraola is close to becoming Liverpool’s next manager after rejecting approaches from Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard is believed to view the Anfield job as his preferred destination and is reportedly keen on taking over this summer.
While the managerial situation nears a resolution, Liverpool’s recruitment drive is also gathering pace. Reports claim Hughes wants Diomande to be among the first major arrivals of the club’s new era.
Liverpool are understood to be eager to complete a deal before the World Cup begins on June 11, fearing that a strong tournament could increase both the winger’s value and the number of clubs interested in signing him.
Talks with the player’s camp are reportedly already underway, and Diomande is said to be enthusiastic about the prospect of joining Liverpool. The Ivory Coast international reportedly sees the Reds as one of football’s biggest clubs and is attracted by the opportunity to play a key role in the team’s rebuild.
However, negotiations may prove difficult. RB Leipzig are believed to value the 19-year-old highly and are reportedly demanding at least €100 million to part with him. The Bundesliga side view him as one of Europe’s most exciting young attacking talents and are unwilling to sell cheaply.
Despite the hefty valuation, Liverpool’s owners are reportedly prepared to back the move if they decide Diomande is the right fit. A transfer at that price would make him the most expensive Ivorian player in football history, surpassing the fee paid by Arsenal for Nicolas Pepe in 2019.
Liverpool reportedly see Diomande as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, whose future at Anfield remains uncertain. Club officials are said to believe the youngster has the pace, technical ability, and attacking flair needed to develop into one of Europe’s elite wide forwards.
Diomande has also spoken about his ambitions in recent interviews. Addressing reports about his growing valuation, he acknowledged the speculation and admitted that playing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs is a long-term goal.
The winger reflected on his rapid rise through the game, having progressed from Leganés to RB Leipzig in a short period. He also revealed that he previously had trial spells with several clubs, including Rangers, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, and Olympiacos.
Despite impressing during many of those opportunities and even holding conversations with Mauricio Pochettino during a trial at Chelsea, permanent moves never materialised.
Those setbacks eventually left him frustrated, and he considered abandoning the search for opportunities abroad. Instead, he chose to focus on securing a professional contract with Leganés, a decision that ultimately helped relaunch his career and paved the way for his move to Leipzig.
Now regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young prospects, Diomande is being linked with one of the biggest transfers of the summer. Should Liverpool complete the deal, it would send a strong message about the club’s ambitions ahead of a new era under Andoni Iraola.
With managerial changes on the horizon, uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future, and a determined pursuit of top young talent, Liverpool appear focused on rebuilding quickly and returning to the highest level of competition.
