Arsenal Legend Warns Bukayo Saka He Must Improve to Justify £300,000-a-Week Deal

Arsenal Legend Criticises Bukayo Saka Over Recent Performances and £300,000 Weekly Wage

Arsenal legend David O’Leary believes Bukayo Saka needs to improve his performances to justify his lucrative £300,000-per-week contract with the Gunners.

The England international signed a new high-value deal in February but has managed just three goals in eight appearances across all competitions this season.

Saka made an impressive start to the campaign, scoring twice in his opening two matches against Coventry City and Aston Villa. However, he has since found the net only once in his next five outings.

During Arsenal’s 2-1 comeback victory over Leeds United on Saturday, the 25-year-old struggled to make a decisive impact. He registered just two shots, attempted one dribble and missed a late opportunity to extend the Gunners’ lead.

O’Leary, who won two league titles during his time at Arsenal, has called on the winger to rediscover his best form.

O’Leary Questions Saka’s Playing Style

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Arsenal defender praised Saka’s ability but expressed concern about his tendency to go down too easily when challenged by defenders.

O’Leary believes the winger was previously more determined to take on opponents and remain on his feet rather than looking for contact.

Although he still considers Saka a top player, the Arsenal legend feels his recent displays have not matched the expectations that come with being one of the Premier League’s highest-paid footballers.

He also suggested that opposition defenders may be targeting Saka because of the threat he poses, but insisted the forward must become stronger and learn to cope with the physical challenges.

O’Leary added that Saka needs to raise his performance level, pointing to Declan Rice’s impressive display against Leeds as an example of the standards required.

He believes a return to top form from Saka would make Arsenal a more dangerous team.

O’Leary Makes Viktor Gyökeres Prediction

The Arsenal legend also shared his thoughts on Viktor Gyökeres, who has struggled to secure a regular starting place in the Premier League this season.

The Swedish striker has reportedly played just 56 minutes across three league appearances, with Kai Havertz preferred in the starting lineup.

O’Leary suggested that Havertz currently offers Mikel Arteta more options because of his ability to link up play with his teammates.

He indicated that, with Arsenal’s squad fully fit, Gyökeres could continue to find himself on the bench unless he manages to change the manager’s opinion.

Arsenal will hope Saka can rediscover his best form as they continue their campaign across domestic and European competitions.
