Tottenham’s Brentford Defeat Exposes Major Problems Ahead of Transfer Deadline
Tottenham’s unbeaten pre-season now feels like a distant memory after a disastrous Premier League opener against Brentford.
Spurs found themselves three goals down by the 49th minute, completely outplayed by a Brentford side that dominated physically, tactically and technically. The 3-0 scoreline arguably flattered Tottenham, with Igor Thiago even hitting the post from the penalty spot. Had that effort gone in, the margin could have been even more embarrassing.
Although injuries and an incomplete transfer window offer some explanation, the performance raised familiar concerns from last season and will undoubtedly have set alarm bells ringing at the club.
Spurs completely outplayed at the Gtech
Tottenham struggled from the opening whistle, losing battles for second balls and repeatedly being beaten for pace and strength. The situation was particularly frustrating given the club’s huge investment in midfield.
Spurs have reportedly spent around £185 million rebuilding that area, yet Brentford’s Mamadou Sangare looked like the superior player. He played a key role in the opening goal and appeared completely comfortable against Tottenham’s expensive midfield options.
Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes provided more energy after the interval, with Fernandes particularly impressive, but the damage had already been done. Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall were both withdrawn at half-time following difficult first-half performances.
Tottenham’s defence offered little reassurance either. Antonin Kinsky, who had impressed during pre-season, looked uncertain, while Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi struggled to contain Thiago.
The expected returns of Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro should strengthen the back line, but the performance still carried echoes of the problems that plagued Spurs last campaign.
Tottenham desperately need attacking reinforcements
The situation was equally concerning in attack.
With injuries forcing De Zerbi to improvise, Tottenham struggled to create meaningful chances and rarely threatened Brentford’s defence. Mikey Moore provided some of their brighter moments, particularly with his movement towards the far post, although he could reportedly leave on loan before the transfer deadline.
The defeat only underlined the need for further recruitment, with names such as Savinho and Omar Marmoush reportedly being considered while several players could also depart before the window closes.
Thiago, meanwhile, demonstrated exactly what Tottenham are missing.
Despite failing to convert his penalty, the striker constantly caused problems with his movement, strength and ability to drop deep before attacking spaces behind the defence. After scoring 22 league goals last season, the former Club Brugge forward showed why he remains such a difficult player for defenders to handle.
His performance also highlighted the growing concerns surrounding Richarlison.
Richarlison’s future under renewed scrutiny
The contrast between Thiago and Tottenham’s own No. 9 was difficult to ignore.
Richarlison finished last season as Spurs’ leading Premier League scorer with 11 goals and added two more during pre-season, including the winner against Chelsea. However, questions about his future continue to grow, particularly with only a year remaining on his contract and Marmoush potentially arriving.
Against Brentford, Richarlison struggled badly.
He lasted 68 minutes, managed just 21 touches, registered no shots and lost possession five times. His contribution without the ball was also limited, winning only two of ten duels and none of his four aerial battles.
Brentford’s defenders effectively prevented him from becoming an outlet whenever Tottenham came under pressure.
That performance has inevitably reignited the debate over whether Richarlison still has a long-term future in north London. Despite producing important moments and retaining support among sections of the fanbase, his overall league record of 27 goals across four seasons has left plenty of room for questions.
With Dominic Solanke expected to return from injury and Marmoush potentially on the way, Tottenham may soon face a major decision over the Brazilian.
If Spurs are serious about avoiding another difficult campaign, their defeat at Brentford should serve as a warning. There is still plenty of work to do before the transfer window closes.
