Jamie Carragher Names Liverpool Star in ‘What’s the Point?’ Warning Ahead of New Season

Jamie Carragher has raised a major concern about Liverpool ahead of Andoni Iraola’s first season in charge, with the former Reds defender questioning the balance of the midfield.

Despite bringing in Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo on loan this summer, Liverpool still have gaps to fill. The departures of Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have also weakened the squad, while several players remain sidelined through injury.

Carragher believes midfield remains Liverpool’s biggest problem. He is particularly concerned about the current combination of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, arguing that all three are naturally inclined to push forward and cover ground rather than provide the defensive balance the team needs.

The former Liverpool captain also questioned Mac Allister’s role, insisting that if he is not being used as the team’s main passer and playmaker, his purpose in the midfield becomes unclear.

“What’s the point of Mac Allister if he’s not your passer?” Carragher argued, suggesting Liverpool need to sign a genuine defensive midfielder who can protect the back line and control the centre of the pitch.

He also warned that Liverpool could be left seriously short in midfield if Gravenberch suffers an injury, leaving Mac Allister and Szoboszlai as the only senior central midfield options.

Liverpool will continue their preparations for the new campaign against Como at Anfield on August 16 before opening their Premier League season away to Newcastle United on August 23.
