When Liverpool signed Harvey Elliott in 2019, there were high expectations that he could develop into one of the finest English footballers in the world.
The boyhood Reds supporter appeared to be living up to that promise after making 99 appearances for Liverpool across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.
However, regular playing time has become increasingly difficult to secure. Following Arne Slot’s arrival as Liverpool manager in 2024, Elliott was no longer viewed as an important part of the team’s plans.
The midfielder subsequently joined Aston Villa on loan for the 2025/26 season. However, he managed only nine appearances throughout the campaign, with Villa unwilling to trigger the £35 million purchase option included in the agreement.
Andoni Iraola also did not consider Elliott part of his plans, leading to the 23-year-old joining Spanish side Valencia on a season-long loan on September 1.
The Liverpool midfielder would have viewed the move to Spain as an opportunity to revive his career, but his experience has not gone according to expectations.
Elliott made his Valencia debut five days after completing the transfer, appearing as a second-half substitute against reigning La Liga champions Barcelona. Despite Valencia suffering a disappointing 5-0 defeat, he showed some encouraging signs.
Unfortunately, he has struggled to build on that performance. The former Fulham academy player has featured six times for Valencia, coming on as a substitute in every appearance.
He has accumulated just 152 minutes of playing time in the white shirt and is yet to contribute a goal or an assist.
His latest appearance against Villarreal ended in disappointment after he received two yellow cards in quick succession and was sent off. As a result, he will be unavailable for Valencia’s next fixture against Elche.
Following his difficult start in Spain, Julian Burgos, a Valencia correspondent for Spanish newspaper AS, has delivered a harsh assessment of Elliott’s performances.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Burgos said:
“At the moment, I don’t think he has adapted… he has been a significant disappointment, especially considering he arrived with the pedigree of coming from Liverpool.
“It is true that he has been putting in the work over the last few weeks, and he appears to be in better physical shape.
“Honestly, if the option to terminate the loan arises, Valencia will likely pursue it. With a new sporting director and manager – compounded by the team’s poor form – it seems they will look to undo many of the moves made by the previous sporting director, the Scotsman Ron Gourlay.”
Valencia are currently 19th in the La Liga standings, having collected just six points from their opening 10 matches.
Elliott will now be hoping to turn things around and make a positive impression when Javier Aguirre’s side host Real Madrid at the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday, November 7.
