Thierry Henry has addressed the controversy surrounding his jokes about Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal and presenter Kate Scott during the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Yamal claimed the Kopa Trophy for the third consecutive year, recognising him as the world’s best young player. However, his reaction to the award and his exchange with Henry quickly became a talking point among football fans.
Before Yamal received his trophy, Henry jokingly asked whether it was the award he truly wanted, appearing to reference his ambition to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or itself. Yamal responded with a smile, making it clear that he wanted to win every possible award.
Following the online backlash, the Arsenal legend took to Instagram to explain his comments and defend his intentions.
Henry insisted that he was not trying to challenge Yamal’s ego, describing himself as a huge admirer of the young Barcelona star. He explained that his question was simply a light-hearted reference to the bigger prize that was still to be announced.
The French football icon also addressed criticism over his exchange with co-host Kate Scott, involving the pronunciation of the name Socrates, the Brazilian legend honoured through the Ballon d’Or’s humanitarian award.
Henry maintained that Scott was fully involved in the joke and had deliberately pronounced the name that way. Scott also responded to his post, indicating that there was no disrespect involved.
The former Arsenal striker further clarified his comments about Harry Kane, who beat Yamal to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Henry revealed that he had congratulated the Bayern Munich striker and described him as a deserving winner, praising his dedication and hard work. He also explained that his support for Kylian Mbappé was natural because they share the same nationality.
Henry concluded by urging fans to stop misinterpreting his comments, reaffirming his admiration for Kane and Yamal while insisting that he had never intended to disrespect Scott.
