Jamie Carragher has delivered a brutal verdict on Tottenham following Harry Kane’s historic Ballon d’Or victory, insisting the striker would never have won football’s biggest individual award if he had remained at Spurs.
Kane made history by becoming the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to claim the prestigious prize. His incredible 73 goals for club and country, combined with Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga success and England’s impressive World Cup campaign, helped him beat the competition.
Carragher believes Kane’s move from Tottenham to Bayern Munich played a major role in his achievement, giving him a better opportunity to compete for major trophies and attract attention in the Ballon d’Or race.
The former Liverpool defender said Kane’s ambitions go beyond breaking Premier League scoring records, as the striker is determined to achieve even more in his career.
Carragher’s verdict was clear:
“There’s no way Harry Kane could’ve won the Ballon d’Or if he was playing for Tottenham.”
Kane scored 213 Premier League goals during his time at Spurs but never managed to win a major trophy with the North London club. Since joining Bayern, he has enjoyed greater success in the pursuit of silverware.
Carragher also praised Kane as one of the outstanding players of his generation, expressing happiness that an English footballer had finally ended the country’s long wait for another Ballon d’Or winner.
With England finishing third at the 2026 World Cup and Kane scoring six goals during the tournament, his remarkable individual performances further strengthened his case for the award.
