Ronald Araujo’s temporary move to Liverpool could still turn into a permanent transfer.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Liverpool are prepared to activate the £47 million purchase option in the defender’s loan deal if he continues performing at his current level. The Uruguayan has undoubtedly made a significant impact since becoming part of the starting XI this summer.
The former Barcelona captain has been a regular presence for Liverpool during the 2026/27 campaign, playing 405 of a possible 630 Premier League minutes while also starting every Champions League match.
Although Liverpool’s shortage of natural right-back options has arguably created more opportunities for Araujo, his impressive displays in that position deserve considerable credit. His performances have helped strengthen the team’s defensive organisation and stability.
It may still be early in the season, but Liverpool appear to have secured an excellent addition in a versatile, top-level centre-back. His experience could also help fill the leadership void left by the summer departures of important figures such as Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.
The summer transfer window once again demonstrated how much clubs are willing to spend on highly rated players. Enormous fees were paid for established stars and promising talents alike, with some deals involving players whose quality remains open to debate.
Against that backdrop, securing Araujo for £47 million could represent outstanding value for Liverpool. Even if transfer fees become more reasonable in the coming months, finding a defender of his calibre at that price may prove difficult.
However, questions remain over who will ultimately decide the player’s future. Araujo himself will have an important say in the matter, although his performances suggest he is enjoying his time at Anfield.
Reports indicate that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will have the final say on whether the defender can leave permanently. However, the Spanish giants have already invested heavily in Pau Cubarsi as a central figure in their defence, while Gerard Martin has also established himself as an important member of the backline.
There is a strong argument that Araujo, given his current form and confidence, could offer more than his Spanish counterpart. Nevertheless, Barcelona may be reluctant to disrupt an established defensive partnership by bringing the 27-year-old back into the starting XI.
