Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has given his verdict on Cole Palmer’s sending-off during Chelsea’s painful 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer was shown a red card in the 80th minute after receiving two yellow cards within just nine minutes, making Chelsea’s comeback hopes even more difficult.
The Blues were already trailing after goalkeeper Mike Penders’ costly own goal in the 77th minute. Just three minutes after Palmer’s dismissal, Mathys Tel produced a stunning solo goal to seal a memorable victory for Tottenham.
The result also marked only Spurs’ second league victory at Chelsea’s home ground in 36 years! 😱
🗣️ WHAT THE FORMER REFEREE SAID
Mark Halsey believes Palmer’s first yellow card was justified after the Chelsea midfielder reacted aggressively towards an opponent who was on the ground.
However, the former official was even more emphatic about Palmer’s second booking, which came following a late challenge on Conor Gallagher that caught the midfielder around the ankle.
Halsey insisted that Palmer had no reason to complain, backing referee Chris Kavanagh for making the correct decision.
🗣️ XABI ALONSO BREAKS HIS SILENCE
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso also admitted that Palmer needs to learn from the incident.
The Spanish coach stressed that his players must show greater maturity during difficult moments, particularly when they still have time to fight their way back into a match.
Alonso added that he wanted to review the footage before speaking to Palmer, but made it clear that the incident should serve as a lesson for the future.
