Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has provided an update on Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong after both players were forced off during the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday.
Szoboszlai returned to the starting XI after missing Liverpool’s matches against Manchester City and LASK. However, his comeback was cut short when he was substituted just after the half-hour mark, with Trey Nyoni coming on in his place.
Frimpong’s afternoon was even shorter. The Dutch right-back entered the game at half-time but lasted only seven minutes before suffering a problem that forced him off, with Rio Ngumoha replacing him.
🗣️ IRAOLA EXPLAINS SZOBOSZLAI’S CONDITION
Speaking after the match, Iraola suggested that Szoboszlai’s issue was not a fresh injury but that he had yet to recover fully.
“He has tried, he has trained the last days, but we didn’t know the minutes he’d have. It’s not another injury. He’s still not healed,” the Liverpool boss explained.
The update suggests the Hungarian midfielder may have returned before fully recovering from the problem that kept him out of action earlier in the week.
😟 FRIMPONG SUFFERS A MUSCLE PROBLEM
Iraola also revealed that Frimpong had experienced cramp during Liverpool’s Champions League match against LASK, which meant he was not expected to start against Brentford.
The manager brought him on at half-time, hoping to add more attacking threat against 10 men, but the defender quickly felt something in his muscle.
“He felt straight away something in the muscle,” Iraola said.
That development raises concerns about Frimpong’s availability, particularly given his previous hamstring problems last season.
⏳ WILL THEY MISS THE VILLARREAL CLASH?
Liverpool have little time to recover, with Villarreal visiting Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Szoboszlai’s involvement remains uncertain, especially after his early substitution, while Frimpong’s muscle problem could require further assessment before his return date becomes clear.
With a busy schedule ahead, Liverpool will be hoping both players avoid serious injuries as they prepare for another important European fixture.
