Cristian Romero ‘Almost Certain’ to Leave Tottenham as Arsenal Transfer Twist Sparks Major Spurs Fears
The rivalry between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could be heading for another explosive chapter, with Cristian Romero’s future reportedly becoming a major talking point amid fresh interest from the Gunners.
A direct move between the two North London rivals is extremely rare, particularly when it involves an established first-team player. Over the years, only a handful of senior players have crossed the divide, making any potential Romero transfer particularly controversial.
The latest youngster to make the journey is 18-year-old Elijah Upson, who recently joined Arsenal’s academy from Tottenham. As the son of former Arsenal defender Matt Upson, his move is unlikely to create the same level of anger as a senior transfer.
That is because a first-team player switching directly from Spurs to Arsenal is viewed very differently by supporters.
Sol Campbell Still Haunts Tottenham
The most famous example remains Sol Campbell.
In 2001, the Tottenham captain left the club after his contract expired and stunned supporters by joining Arsenal on a free transfer.
Campbell was far more than an ordinary Spurs player. He was the club captain, a defensive leader and one of the biggest names at White Hart Lane. His decision to join Arsenal therefore caused enormous outrage among Tottenham supporters.
Arsenal fans, however, quickly embraced him.
Campbell went on to play a major role in Arsenal’s success, winning two Premier League titles and becoming part of the legendary Invincibles side that completed the 2003/04 league campaign unbeaten.
More than 20 years later, his transfer remains one of the most infamous moments in the history of the North London rivalry.
Could Romero Become the Next Campbell?
That is why the possibility of Cristian Romero joining Arsenal would be such a huge deal.
Romero isn’t just another Tottenham player. The Argentine is the club captain, a senior international and one of Spurs’ most important defenders.
If he were to leave Tottenham and immediately join Arsenal, the reaction across North London would be enormous.
For Spurs supporters, seeing their captain walk into the Emirates wearing Arsenal colours would be an extremely painful sight. For Arsenal, meanwhile, the opportunity to sign an elite defender while simultaneously weakening their biggest rivals would be almost impossible to ignore.
However, there is one major obstacle.
Tottenham would almost certainly be reluctant to approve such a move. The memory of Campbell’s controversial transfer remains deeply rooted in the rivalry, and allowing another Spurs captain to directly join Arsenal could reopen old wounds.
The history of direct transfers between the two clubs already includes names such as George Hunt, Freddie Cox and, most famously, Sol Campbell.
But if Romero were to follow Campbell’s path, this could become one of the most explosive Tottenham-Arsenal transfer stories in years.
