Liverpool are expected to strengthen their squad, but a new report suggests that Andoni Iraola has identified one particular position as his main priority ahead of the January transfer window.
The Reds have several talented players in their squad, with young midfielder Trey Nyoni continuing to impress. Following Liverpool’s 6-3 Champions League victory away to LASK on Wednesday, Iraola praised the youngster’s maturity, tactical awareness and understanding of the game.
The Liverpool manager believes Nyoni has shown impressive qualities despite his limited first-team experience. However, he stressed that the teenager must maintain his high standards in training and continue developing.
Iraola also highlighted Nyoni’s versatility, explaining that he could be used in different midfield roles depending on the team’s needs. He added that Liverpool’s ability to introduce inexperienced young players into both the Premier League and Champions League is a positive sign for the club.
Despite Nyoni’s progress, a respected source on X claims that Iraola wants Liverpool to prioritise signing a defensive midfielder in January.
According to the report, Iraola views the No. 6 position as the most important area to strengthen if Liverpool are to improve tactically and reach another level.
Nyoni’s impressive performances have demonstrated his potential, but the youngster is still developing and may not yet be ready to start regularly. Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai generally offer more attacking qualities, potentially leaving Liverpool short of the defensive balance needed in midfield.
The report suggests that Liverpool need an elite defensive midfielder who can protect the backline, control the centre of the pitch and improve the team’s overall balance.
Monaco’s Lamine Camara has been mentioned as a potential dream target. The midfielder has received glowing praise from manager Filipe Luis, who highlighted his exceptional concentration, ability to control the game and outstanding overall qualities.
Liverpool’s previous success with Fabinho, who joined the club in 2018, demonstrates the importance of having a specialist defensive midfielder. A similar signing could help Iraola build a stronger and more balanced team.
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another potential option. Although he could command a significant transfer fee, his composure, technical ability and intelligence in front of the defence make him an attractive candidate.
With the January transfer window approaching, strengthening the defensive midfield position could prove crucial to Liverpool’s ambitions of taking the team to the next level.
