Liverpool have reportedly suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Barcelona’s highly rated young midfielder Marc Bernal, with the Spanish giants reaching an agreement on a new long-term contract.
The 19-year-old has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. Atlético Madrid have also been monitoring his progress.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is believed to be a big admirer of Bernal, with the Reds reportedly considering a move in the summer of 2027 if his opportunities at Barcelona become limited.
However, Barcelona are determined to keep hold of their promising academy graduate.
The Catalan giants have agreed a new contract that will keep Bernal at the Camp Nou until 2031, with a staggering €500 million release clause included to discourage potential suitors.
Despite suffering a serious knee injury that disrupted his 2024/25 campaign, Bernal returned strongly last season, scoring five goals from midfield.
His physical strength, composure on the ball and ability to control the tempo of games have drawn comparisons with Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets.
Bernal has also made his intentions clear, expressing his desire to establish himself as a key player at his boyhood club under manager Hansi Flick.
