Tottenham are reportedly not considering a sale of Micky van de Ven despite ongoing links between the defender and Liverpool.
The Netherlands international has emerged as a potential long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk at Anfield, but Tottenham are said to be comfortable with the situation and have no plans to part ways with their captain.
Van de Ven signed a new contract with Spurs in August that runs until 2031 before subsequently being handed the club captaincy. Those developments have put Tottenham in a strong position when it comes to his future.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Pete O’Rourke explained why Spurs are not worried about the growing interest in the 25-year-old.
He said Tottenham are “quite relaxed” about the situation after securing Van de Ven on a long-term deal, adding that the defender’s new status as club captain makes it difficult to see the club being willing to lose such an important player.
O’Rourke also made Tottenham’s position clear, stating that the club will not consider selling Van de Ven anytime soon. While top players naturally attract interest from other clubs, Spurs are planning their future with the Dutch defender remaining at the heart of their team.
Van de Ven’s contract until 2031 gives Tottenham little reason to feel pressured into accepting an offer, while his appointment as captain further highlights how important he has become to the club.
Liverpool have previously been linked with Van de Ven as a possible successor to Van Dijk, and his qualities make the interest understandable.
The Dutch defender combines outstanding recovery speed with physical strength and confidence in possession. His experience in the Premier League is another factor that could make him an appealing option for Liverpool.
However, Tottenham’s stance means any potential move would be extremely difficult to complete. With Van de Ven tied down until 2031 and now serving as club captain, Spurs have little motivation to negotiate over one of their key players.
Liverpool could also already have a promising long-term replacement for Van Dijk within their own squad in Jeremy Jacquet.
The young French centre-back has impressed since arriving at Anfield and has shown positive signs when playing alongside Van Dijk. His recent performances have continued to raise his profile, including an impressive full senior debut for France during the international break.
Jacquet’s development could therefore reduce Liverpool’s need to make a major investment in another centre-back.
Van de Ven’s qualities make him an attractive target, but Tottenham’s unwillingness to sell and Jacquet’s rapid progress could mean Liverpool already have a more straightforward answer to their long-term defensive succession plans.
